Social distancing has been touted as the key when it comes to covid-19 prevention but is it enough? Here’s what a fresh study has to say.

When it comes to covid-19 prevention, there are only two mantras that resonate in today’s world. One of them is to wash your hands often and the second is to maintain social distance.

A study published by the journal Science about a month ago claimed that countries such as the United States may need to endure the social distance measures until 2022 to gain victory over coronavirus. Since then, many studies have in figuring out the right way to practice social distance, which usually include keeping a distance of six feet.

Unfortunately, more recent studies claim that mandatory six-foot distance may not be enough and that we may need to be further apart to prevent catching SARS-CoV-2.

In a paper published in the journal Physics of Fluids, researchers Talib Dbouk and Dimitris Drikakis found that even in the breeze of 4 kph, saliva traveling 18 feet in just 5 seconds. These findings make a six-foot rule is void.

“Cloud droplets will affect adults and children of different heights,” said Drikakis. “Shorter adults and children could be at higher risk if they are located within the trajectory of the travelling saliva droplets.”
According to the researchers we need to learn how saliva traveling by air when someone coughs or sneezes. There are many factors that affect how saliva droplets traveling, including: the size and number of droplets; how they interact with each other and the surrounding air as they disperse and evaporate; how heat and mass transfer; and the humidity and temperature of the surrounding air.

Researchers have designed a calculation mechanism to study the circumstances of each droplet of saliva, which move through the air in front of the cough. According to them the effects of moisture, dispersion forces, interaction of saliva and air, and how the droplets change from liquid to vapor and evaporates a lot of things.

Each cell stores information about variables such as pressure, fluid velocity, temperature, mass of droplets, droplet positioning etc, “said Dbouk.

“The purpose of mathematical modeling and simulation to take into account all real clutch mechanism or possible interactions between the main bulk fluid flow and saliva droplets, and the droplets of saliva itself”, he added.

The researchers also throw some light on how the impact of the transmission temperature. They say that the following things affect many in the movement of particles of saliva:

1. Whether you are indoors or outdoors
2. Is there air conditioning in the room or not

Researchers also threw some light on how temperature impacts the transmission. They said that the following things affect a lot in the movement of saliva particles:

2. Whether there is an air-conditioning in the room or not

“This work is vital, because it concerns health and safety distance guidelines, advances the understanding of spreading and transmission of airborne diseases, and helps form precautionary measures based on scientific results,” concluded Drikakis.

So, even if you have started interacting with people and are back to work please ensure that you wear a mask at all times and stay away from crowded places at least for a while to prevent covid-19.
